Here on our NCB Radio “Road to the FA Cup”, we are following the winners in each round, all the way through to Wembley

Godalming Town in turn, went out of the FA Cup in the 4th Qualifying Round. In a match where both teams knew the winners would be in the draw for the 1st Round (proper), where League clubs from League 1 and 2 join in, visitors Maidenhead United won 5.0 at Wey Court. In the 1st Round, Maidenhead United  earned a home tie against League 2 side, Aldershot Town, in which they held them 1.1, but went down 2.0 in the replay.  In the 2nd Round, Aldershot Town went down 1.0 to League 1 side, Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
In the 3rd Round, Sheffield Wednesday surprisingly defeated West Ham, 1.0, also at Hillsborough, and in the 4th Round have drawn away to Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

The Football League so far:

In the Championship, two of the promoted sides, Brighton and Southampton (which of course, will please Aaron James), have made impressive starts to the season, lying in 1st and 2nd position respectively. Other teams up there are Derby, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, and West Ham, who started their Championship campaign with an unlucky 1.0 defeat at Cardiff City, and are looking stronger, and following their 3.0 win at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest, are 5th.

In League 1, MK Dons, Charlton and Preston North End lead the way. The pre-season promotion favourites are my team, Huddersfield Town, and Chesterfield. Huddersfield started with 3 draws on the trot, against Bury, Rochdale and Hartlepool – but since then, have settled down now and following two victories are up to 8th. As far as League fixtures are concerned, they have now gone 30 games without defeat. Chesterfield have struggled a little at the start, and find themselves in the bottom three. They will settle soon I believe, and move up the table.

In League 2, Rotherham are top having made an excellent start. Chasing the Millers are Morecambe and newly-promoted Crawley Town. Plymouth Argyle had a torrid time last season with administration and a ten point deduction. I am very much against these point deductions for administration (does the sport no favours in my view) but I’m not going into that now, and in this case, it resulted in relegation. Reeling from financial difficulties, they presently find themselves bottom of League 2. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel for them. Their administrator, Brendan Guilfoyle has said a firm, bidding to buy the club, does have the funds, and although it still has to authorise it, a deal is now imminent. “Solicitors are now working to finalise the documentation, and complete the sale to Bishop International Limited/Plymouth Argyle (125) Limited. Hopefully, by the time I do my next entry here, their future, and financial position will be a little more secure.

Obviously, it’s too early to see properly, how things are going to pan out throughout the Football League, but it is already shaping up to be an interesting season.
