F1 / The Football League Season run-in.

Before I get on to League Football, Sebastian Vettel has had an excellent start to the F1 season, with two victories, & almost double the points (50) of the second placed driver, Jenson Button (26), & Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber a further four points behind.  In the constructor’s championship, Red Bull-Renault have 72 points, 24 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes. Next up is the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, followed by the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul Park, 3 weeks later.

Right, moving on to football. Before going on, congratulations must go to the two Sussex teams – Crawley Town on their promotion to the Football League & Brighton, to the Championship.

Where do my predictions go now?

In the Championship, it is looking good for QPR now, & the second automatic promotion space will I think go to Norwich City, with Cardiff City, Leeds United, Reading & Nottingham Forest all vying for promotion through the play-offs. At the bottom, with just 5 games left, things are looking tough for the the 3 teams presently at the bottom, Scunthorpe United, Preston North End and Sheffield United – with 37, 36 & 35 points respectively. They are 6 points adrift of Crystal Palace on 43.

In League 1, it is already congratulations to Brighton, & I think their south coast rivals, Southampton, will join them in automatic promotion.  Huddersfield Town & Peterborough are safe in the play-offs, & the other two places will be decided between MK Dons, Rochdale and Bournemouth. At the bottom, I think that Plymouth Argyle (deducted ten points of course) and Swindon Town look likely to go down now, with two of Dagenham & Redbridge, Walsall, Bristol Rovers & Notts County joining them.

In League 2, Chesterfield & Bury look to be going up now. With only 5 points seperating 3rd place Wycombe Wanderers, with Shrewsbury, Torquay United, Stevenage Borough, Gillingham & Accrington Stanley, it is wide open for the 3rd automotic promotion place, & the winner of the play-offs between the next four teams. At the bottom, things are looking desparate for Stockport County, 5 points adrift of safety with a much inferior goal difference. Northampton Town, Burton Albion & Barnet, whose ground I visited only last week are in serious danger of joining them in the Blue Square Premier (Conference) next season.

In the Blue Square Premier, it’s congratulations to Crawley Town on their elevation to the Football League. Then there are 6 teams that could possibly make it,  & join them in promotion through the play-offs.

For most teams,  there are just a few league matches left now, and for some, there are the Promotion Play-off’s to come.  There are plenty of twists and turns still to come.
